How could I remove stains from the hem of a white wedding dress?
Hello,
I have seen a beautiful white wedding gown on ebay which I would love to buy - its gorgeous! However, it is a used dress and and the person selling it points out that when she wore it for her wedding, it was too long for her and dragged on the floor so there is some staining along the hemline. Although she says that it has already been dry cleaned, the stains are still there.
I don't want to buy it unless I know I could remove the stains, but I'm not sure if this would be possible. Can anyone help me? Is there a way to get stubborn staining out of fabric? It looks like satin or silk, if that makes any difference.

If the dress is satin, you can clean it. If it is silk, you can't.
I used to re-sell used wedding dresses on eBay, and I have cleaned many stains from them...so I could then sell them for a profit. 
Satin is actually a fairly sturdy material.
1. To clean basic dirt, just wash on the permanent press cycle right in your machine...warm water, regular detergent.
Believe it or not, machine washing on the permanent press cycle will not hurt your gown...unless you wash it more than twice.
After washing, iron the gown right out of the machine, using a medium iron setting. Do not use the "Cotton" or high setting, or you will melt the dress. Use the "Satin" or medium setting. I used to use the lowest possible "Steam" setting. You want the iron to steam, but not melt. The ironing will not only get rid of wrinkles, it will help the gown dry. After ironing, hang the gown to allow it to dry completely. Do NOT machine dry...machine drying will ruin the dress.
2. For stubborn stains, pretreat the stains with dish washing liquid. It doesn't matter which brand you use, as long as it's a good name brand. Most people recommend Dawn, but I've found other brands work just as well...Ajax, Palmolive, etc. Gently rub the dish washing liquid into the stains and allow it to sit for 30 minutes...then launder the dress as described above. Dish washing liquid will work on oily stains and most other stubborn stains.
3. For extremely stubborn stains, use "Fast Orange" hand cleaner. Pour some Fast Orange on the stains and rub between your palms. Fast Orange contains pumice, which is abrasive, so rub carefully...however, you CAN remove extremely stubborn stains with it and not harm the dress, as long as you are gentle. After you have rubbed out the stain, launder as described above.

Do not launder a dress more than twice or it will begin to show wear. Most gowns can handle 1 or 2 washings...the satin, chiffon, and lace will all stand up to it.
Honestly, these steps work. I made hundreds of used gowns look new again.

How to avoid seam lines in wedding gown?
I've been sewing everyday dresses for years, and after failing to find my dream wedding gown for my wedding next year, I've decided to sew my own. I've never tackled something so important before (read: I've made Halloween costumes with lots of fabric, but didn't care if there were seam lines) so now I'm really looking for some advice on how to avoid seam lines in the silk for my wedding dress. The silk I plan on using comes 60" wide...what's the best way to create a full skirt without noticeable ugly seam lines?? I am going to make a mock-up of the dress out of cotton before I make the actual gown (just FYI). Thanks
Seams are a fact of life unless you start sewing with a parachute and even they have seams in them. If you use a straight stitch to make the seam and press the seam open gently, the seams shouldn't scream at you when viewed from the right side. It also helps to put a thick towel on the ironing board to avoid the crease at the edge of the seam allowance. The practice garment is a good idea but I suggest you don't use woven cotton. It drapes and presses drastically differently from silk. Perhaps you could find a polyester lining fabric that feels silky. It would then drape the same and you'd have practice sewing while it tries to escape. Yep, all the silky feeling fabrics are challenging to sew.
