I want to make my own wedding gown and my own bridesmaids dresses but will that be too much?

I'm getting married in a few months as a matter of fact I've already booked the venue and sent off for the invitations but since I'm an aspiring fashion designer I was thinking of designing and making my own gown and also the bridesmaids dresses as well. Granted I have a lot of other stuff to do for the wedding as well like finding a caterer, doing place settings for the reecption, mail of the invitations, etc but however I have my heart set on designing my own dress and stuff but my mom thinks it will be too much. Is she right?

Callie sweetheart, do you honestly know what you're getting yourself into? Have you sewn a wedding dress before? Have you designed a wedding dress before? Do you have experience making your own patterns? Bridal sewing is a WHOLE 'nother level of sewing, it's really an art form. I'm saying this from experience. I've worked as a seamstress (never designed though), I've even altered wedding dresses and formal wear, and I've worked in the industry in one way or another for over 20 years. I would never ever ever in my wildest dreams design and sew a wedding gown, particularly with only a few months, particularly not MY wedding gown.

If you're dead set on doing this, and IF you have had experience sewing bridal and/or formal wear, I would limit myself to only sewing the wedding gown. Possibly use existing patterns to work from as well. Don't try to do the bridesmaids dresses as well, I think your mom is right and you're just taking too much on. You're going to be stressed as it is, you don't need to add to it. I'd also have a drop dead date, about 8 weeks prior to your wedding, that if your dress isn't finished (or very darned close to it--I'm talking hemming), then you go and buy something, so that you're not stressing over your dress anymore. And I'm only saying this if you have some prior experience sewing bridal or formal wear. If you don't, and this is your first attempt at sewing bridal, then I would tell you to not even try. It's not going to be worth it. Sew your daughter's dresses for them, that will be just as much fun.

try Ebay, craiglist and whipads. If that doesn't work you may want to try local consignments shops. Some local bridal shops also buy gently used or new dresses.

If you do place online ads make sure to have an eye catching phrase and great pictures.
